Training

General

After a very snowy winter, the terrain of Kytäjä-Usmi is again ready for the orienteers preparing for the Kytäjä-Jukola Relay. The training courses for spring 2010 are available from May 1 until June 20.  Just like last autumn, we offer five training courses: long distance, butterfly, relay and two middle distance courses. The courses have been planned so that they can easily be shortened to make a suitable training for anyone interested. Training course descriptions

K2010.1 Long distance
The long distance training course for the spring is actually long this time. In its full length, the course is 8.8km. The course can easily be shortened by making short cuts when the course is crossed, creating different course options starting from 3km. This course offers long legs with route choices, but also precise orienteering in the more detailed terrain.

Scale: 1:10 000, contour interval 5m, mapping: Arvo Paulin 2008

Map alternatives:
- K2010.1 – Long distance 8.8km (this course can easily be shortened to distances starting from 3km)
- K2010.1 - All controls

K2010.2 Relay
Gather a team of three runners and practise relay with mass start and forking. Each of the single courses can also be used as an individual training. These courses take orienteers through the wide variety of different terrain types in this area - even and fast open rock areas, steep hillsides and at times some slower terrain with less visibility.

Scale: 1:10 000, contour interval 5m, mapping: Arvo Paulin 2008

Map alternatives:
- K2010.2 - Relay A 5.7km (can be modified to e.g. 4.7km or 3.6km)
- K2010.2 - Relay B 5.7km (can be modified to e.g. 4.7km or 3.6km)
- K2010.2 - Relay C 5.7km (can be modified to e.g. 4.7km or 3.6km)

K2010.3 Middle distance 1
This course takes you through the fabulous open rock terrain of Usmi offering challenges in the detailed but very runnable terrain. The course has a large number of controls in the fast parts of the training area.

Map alternatives:
K2010.3 – Middle distance 1 5,0 km (can easily be modified to e.g. 2.9km)
K2010.3 – All controls

K2010.4 Butterfly

The butterfly training course, just as the main parts of the middle distance 2 training, runs in previously unused terrain. This terrain is fairly runnable in the spring and visibility remains good at least as long as the trees grow leaves. In contrast to the fast, runnable terrain, the area covers some less runnable terrain, as well. Due to the relatively small height differences, this training course is well suited for both fast-paced orienteering as well as for a slower, easier work out.

Please note! To reach this training area, you have to use a gravel road that passes through several farmyards. Because of this, please do not use this training area after 9 pm in the evening -> night orienteering in this area is not allowed!

Scale: 1:10 000, contour interval 5m, mapping:
2010 / Eero-Antti Lonka (The major part of the map used)
2001 / Kimmo Nykänen (The parts with the beginning and the end of the course)

Map alternatives:

  • K2010.4 – Butterfly - 6.9km (The course can easily be modified in various ways by leaving out selected loops.)

K2010.5 Middle distance 2

The second middle distance training course for this spring offers you an excellent chance for fast-paced orienteering. The courses run mainly in the runnable old forest terrain with good visibility. The control sites are fairly easy so you can keep up your pace from start to finish.

Please note! To reach this training area, you have to use a gravel road that passes through several farmyards. Because of this, please do not use this training area after 9 pm in the evening -> night orienteering in this area is not allowed!

Map alternatives:

  • K2010.5 – Middle distance 2 - 4.8km

K2010.6 – Middle Distance 3

Jukola Relay is approaching and it is time for a final workout! The Middle Distance 3 course is an excellent chance to practise your orienteering skills. The course uses the same terrain as trainings K2010.2 and K2010.3, but the checkpoints are completely new. So, clean terrain without previous trails ahead!

Scale: 1:10 000, contour interval 5m, mapping: Arvo Paulin 2008

Map alternatives:
- K2010.6 – Middle 3 - 4,9 km

Driving instructions are the same as for trainings K2010.2 and K2010.3
